Wolverton oversaw a team of consultants responsible for designing multiple improvements to the 91-acre Alexander Park in Gwinnett County. This highly visited park needed some improvements to provide a better user experience. The primary goals of this project were to make this popular park accessible to more patrons, to provide more amenities for patrons, and to improve access to and through the Park while preserving the Park’s aesthetic beauty. Our team designed over 300 parking spaces, new driveways, a new driveway connection to a State Route and new park amenities, including a dog park, event pavilion, playground, new restroom building and over 2,000 feet of new multi-use trails.
The team developed an extensive hydrology study that analyzed the existing stormwater infrastructure and detention system and developed new bio-retention stormwater management areas to meet water quality and quantity requirements for the new park amenities. Challenges that our team met included preservation of specimen trees, improving traffic circulation through the park while maintaining pedestrian safety and designing within a tight budget. Close coordination was required with the County staff to meet deadlines and ensure compliance with County code requirements and design standards.
