Wolverton partnered with the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System on numerous projects, including the Hesse K-8 School Replacement. For this project, we served as the civil engineer responsible for site and civil design of a 12.92 acre school property. The project included 145,000 square feet of total building area (classrooms, administrative offices, kitchen, gymnasium, recreational areas, central warehouse, etc.). Enrollment for this school is 900+ students and there are 90 full-time staff including teachers and administration. The project included design of a regulation baseball field as well as a multi-purpose athletic field that is intended to accommodate field sports such as soccer, football and lacrosse. Infrastructure, parking and landscaping are provided in accordance with local requirements.
Our design team worked with the architect to develop staging for construction that allowed the new building to be built on existing fields while keeping the school operational and then demolishing the old structure to build the new fields. This stating allowed the school to remain open. Our team fit the parking into the existing footprint of the school in order to design around the large trees on the property. Project design was a collaborative effort that included input from the Owner’s Construction Manager At Risk (CMAR). Approvals and permits were obtained from Chatham County, Chatham-Savannah MPC and State of GA NRCS.
