SR 141 Traffic Study
Wolverton completed the award-winning SR 141 traffic study for the City of Peachtree Corners, which looked at 19 intersections over 3.5 miles along SR 141, Peachtree Parkway. This project ran from the Chattahoochee River on the Gwinnett County/Fulton County border to Holcomb Bridge Road at the merge with Peachtree Industrial Boulevard. The corridor includes residences, businesses and various community features. The corridor carries up to 55,000 vehicles per day and has some of the worst congestion in the metro Atlanta area. Traditionally, studies along SR 141 have been made at an intersection level which does not allow the traffic engineers to study and understand how improvements at one intersection impact the next intersection on the road. By looking at the project for a holistic, corridor-level view, the project team and the City of Peachtree Corners were able to understand how each individual improvement impacted the greater whole. What the study found is that often one intersection improvement, though providing great improvement in Level of Service or operations for the intersection, does NOT help the other intersections further down the corridor. By providing a look at the entire corridor, not only did the Wolverton team provide improvements that help from one intersection to the next, but also gave the City of Peachtree Corners an action plan from which to work to improve the corridor over the short and long term. The study focused on identifying alternative intersection control treatments, some of which have never been implemented in Georgia. The final recommendations included traditional multi-modal improvements, like bike lanes and trails, but also new intersection types like Restricted Crossing U-Turns (RCUTs or Michigan Left Turns), that impact less right-of-way and provide safer travel for all modes of movement. Upon completion of the plan, including two rounds of Public Information Open Houses (PIOHs), the City Council voted to approve the study's recommendations as the SR 141 vision and began immediately finding ways to implement the improvements at several of the intersections. In 2018, this project was selected for the State Award for Traffic Studies by ACEC Georgia, and the award was presented at the 2019 Engineering Excellence Awards.
